Here is a quick rundown on betting on fighting. For those who are new to sportsbetting, don't be intimidated by what you see. All those numbers aren't as complicated as most people believe.
First things first. You need to open a betting account. We personally use BetUS who are reliable and easy to access. You can open an account by clicking on BetUS.com. If you are uneasy about using your credit card online, there is an easy second option. Purchase a Visa Gift Card with your desired amount on it and use that to fund your account.
Second, you need to decide your bankroll. Your bankroll is the amount of money that you have to comfortably bet with. It should never be an amount of money that you cannot afford to lose. Betting should be about fun and risking your mortgage money is not the right idea. Start off with a small amount of money, but keep in mind that you need to be wagering around $20 a fight to begin with.
Betting on fights is very similar to building a stock portfolio. Never put all of your eggs in one basket. Ideally you should risk no more than 10% of your bankroll on any one fight. Even 10% is only for fights with a huge payout and when you are absolutely sure of the outcome. Especially in MMA fights, the end of the fight can come out of nowhere and be completely unexpected (example: Mirko Cro Cop vs. Gabriel Gonzaga.) Boxing gives you a little more breathing room because the fighters have heavier gloves and a 10 count to get back up.
All of that being said, here is an explanation of fight moneylines and how to bet. When you see the moneylines, they will look something like this:
Marco Antonio Barrera +105
Amir Khan -135
What this means is that if you risk $100 on Barrera, you will win your $100 plus $105 for a total payback of $205. For a bet on Amir Khan, a risk of $135 would win $100 for a total payback of $235. The minus sign indicates the favorite while the plus sign indicates the underdog.
You also have the option of betting on the over/under. In this scenario you don't care about the winner, just how long the fight will last. For example if you look at the fight between Khan and Barrera you will see the over/under at 9 1/2. This means if you pick the under, you do not want the fight to go past 1 minute 30 seconds of the 10th round. On the other hand, if you take the over, as soon as 1 minute 30 seconds of the 10th round has passed, you win. This is a great option for fights where you are undecided on the winner but both fighters have knockout power and you feel it will be a short fight.
There are also other bets called "props." Props are where you pick a more specific outcome. These are used to pick if it will end in ko or decision, or what round the fight will end. We tend to stay away from these types of bets and stick straight bets on the fight lines.
That's all there is to it. Check back at ExpertFightPicks.com frequently to get updates and advice on upcoming fights!
Good Luck!
